Gustav Schonfeld, M.D.

Gustav Schonfeld, M.D. earned both his B.A. and M.D. degrees from Washington University in 1956 and 1960, respectively. He completed a residency in internal medicine at New York University, and then returned to Washington University in 1963 as chief resident at The Jewish Hospital of St. Louis and subsequently as a fellow in endocrinology and metabolism at Barnes Hospital. Dr. Schonfeld was a research flight medical officer with the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, stationed at Brooks Air Force Base, Texas, from 1966 to 1968. He then joined the Washington University School of Medicine faculty as an assistant professor of medicine and clinical investigator at John Cochran VA Hospital. In 1972, he was named associate professor of preventive medicine and internal medicine, becoming full professor in 1977. He served as acting head of the Department of Preventive Medicine from 1983 to 1986, was named Kountz Professor of Medicine in 1987, and in 1996, became the Adolphus Busch Professor and Head of the Department of Internal Medicine and physician-in-chief at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Since stepping down from those positions, he has returned to his teaching, research and patient care duties on a full-time basis.

Dr. Schonfeld has conducted lipid research for nearly three decades and is an internationally respected expert on lipid metabolism, atherogenesis and coronary prevention. He served as director of the Division of Atherosclerosis, Nutrition, and Lipid Research from 1972 to 1996.

Dr. Schonfeld has authored or co-authored more than 200 scientific articles and holds memberships in numerous professional societies, including the Association of American Physicians and the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1995, he received the Washington University Medical Center Alumni Association Alumni/Faculty Award.
