Dr. William D. Owens

Dr. Owens, a native Missourian, is a graduate of Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Michigan. Following a tour of duty with the U.S. Navy, he trained in anesthesiology at Massachusetts General Hospital before serving on the faculty at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Owens came to Washington University in 1973 and is currently a professor of anesthesiology.

Dr. Owens was the first Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy and of the Surgical ICU at Barnes Hospital. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Barnes Hospital and has held numerous medical staff positions at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. He served as Chair, Department of Anesthesiology from 1982-1992. He is primarily a clinician with strong interests in teaching and clinical outcomes research. From 1984 - 1996 he was on the Board of Directors of the American board of Anesthesiology and represented anesthesiology at the Residency Review Committee and at the American Board of Medical Specialties. He has served as the President of the Foundation of Anesthesia Education and Research and is currently serving on the Board of Trustees of the Anesthesia Foundation. Dr. Owens is the Immediate Past-President of the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
